• Preparation: Wash your hands thoroughly or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer to maintain hand hygiene.Gather all necessary materials: the syringe, needle, medication vial, alcohol swabs, cotton balls, and any other required equipment.
• Prepare the Medication: If drawing medication from a vial: Clean the rubber stopper of the vial with an alcohol swab. Attach the needle to the syringe by twisting it onto the syringe's luer lock tip. Withdraw air into the syringe (equal to the volume of the intended medication dosage). Insert the needle through the vial's rubber stopper and inject the air into the vial. Invert the vial and draw the medication into the syringe by pulling back the plunger.
• Preparation of the Injection Site: Choose an appropriate injection site based on the medication and the patient's condition. Clean the injection site with an alcohol swab using a circular motion, starting from the center and moving outward.
• Needle Insertion: Hold the syringe like a dart with your dominant hand. Remove the cap from the needle with your non-dominant hand. Use your non-dominant hand to stabilize the skin near the injection site. With a quick and confident motion, insert the needle into the skin at a 90-degree angle or as directed for the specific injection site.
• Aspiration (if required): Pull back slightly on the plunger to check for blood return. If blood appears in the syringe, reposition the needle before injecting the medication.
• Medication Injection: Slowly and steadily depress the plunger with your dominant hand to administer the medication. Maintain a controlled and consistent speed.
• Needle Removal: After administering the medication, release the skin tension and gently remove the needle at the same angle as insertion.
• Disposal: Safely dispose of the used syringe and needle in an appropriate sharps container to prevent needlestick injuries.
